How to Fake Your Webcam on Zoom, Teams, Meet and Discord

Play a video file as your camera on any video call. A step-by-step setup that works on Windows, macOS and Linux, plus where to find the camera setting in each app.

None of the big conferencing apps will play a video file as your camera on their own. There is no “use a video instead” button in Zoom, Teams, Meet or Discord, and sharing your screen is obvious — it lands in the shared-content panel, not in your camera tile.

The way to do it is a virtual camera: software that registers itself with your operating system as a webcam. Your conferencing app then sees it in the camera list like any other device. Here is the whole setup, start to finish.

Before you start

  • A video file. MP4 with H.264 is the safest choice. Match your webcam's usual shape — 1280×720 or 1920×1080, landscape.
  • A virtual camera app. We recommend CamLooper; OBS Studio also works if you already have it.
  • Your conferencing app fully closed. This matters — see step 3.

Step 1 — Install the virtual camera

CamLooper sets up its virtual camera as part of installation. On Windows it registers a DirectShow device during install. On Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora and RHEL the .deb and .rpm pull in v4l2loopback and load it, so the device is ready when the install finishes with nothing to configure by hand.

If you go the OBS route instead, expect to set up a scene and a media source first, then use Start Virtual Camera in the main window. It is a full broadcasting suite, so there is more to work through before you get a camera out of it.

Step 2 — Load your video and start the camera

Open the app, choose your video file, and start the virtual camera. In CamLooper the video loops seamlessly — when it reaches the end it returns to the start with no gap and no flash of black. That join is the detail that decides whether a recording reads as a live feed or as a clip that obviously restarts, so it is worth checking on whatever tool you pick.

Leave the app running for the whole call. The virtual camera exists only while it is open.

Step 3 — Start the camera before the conferencing app

Zoom, Teams and Discord enumerate cameras when they launch. A virtual camera that appears afterwards will not show up until you restart them. This is by far the most common reason people conclude the setup is broken when it is working fine.

Quit the conferencing app completely first — on Windows check the system tray, on macOS use Cmd + Q, since closing the window is not enough for either. Then: virtual camera first, conferencing app second.

Step 4 — Pick the camera in your app

Zoom

  1. Click your profile picture, then Settings
  2. Open the Video tab
  3. In the Camera dropdown, choose CamLooper Virtual Camera

Mid-call you can switch from the arrow next to Stop Video in the toolbar.

Microsoft Teams

  1. Settings and more (…) → SettingsDevices
  2. Choose the virtual camera under Camera

Teams also lets you change it from the pre-join screen, which is the quickest place to confirm it works before anyone sees you.

Google Meet

  1. In a meeting, open the menu → SettingsVideo
  2. Pick the virtual camera under Camera

Meet runs in the browser, so the browser has to have camera permission for the site, and on the first use it may ask again when the device changes.

Discord

  1. User Settings (the gear) → Voice & Video
  2. Choose the virtual camera, and use Test Video to confirm

OBS Studio

Add a Video Capture Device source and select the virtual camera — useful if you want to composite the looped video with overlays before sending it out.

Check it before the call

Open the preview in whatever app you are about to use, or load a webcam test page in your browser, and watch for a full loop cycle. You are looking for three things: the video fills the frame without letterboxing, the loop point is invisible, and the motion is smooth rather than stuttering.

Common gotchas

  • Your video looks mirrored. Zoom and Teams mirror your self-view by default, so text in your video reads backwards to you but correctly to everyone else. Turn off Mirror my video before assuming something is wrong.
  • Only one app at a time on Windows. If Zoom already holds the camera, a second app may get nothing.
  • Portrait video gets pillarboxed. A phone-shot clip will sit in a black-bordered strip in a 16:9 tile. Crop or re-record landscape.
  • macOS needs a signed build. Unsigned camera extensions run but their camera never registers.

Use it honestly

Virtual cameras are supported deliberately by every app above, and they are unremarkable — this is how overlays, branded backgrounds and recorded demos get on screen. What you play through one is on you. Tell the people on the call, and never use one to impersonate someone or to get past an identity check such as a proctored exam or KYC verification.
